Mainz is a German city on the banks of the Rhine River, just a 40-minute drive from the vibrant metropolis of Frankfurt. Combining the old with the new, this destination has a historic centre with modern structures, monumental buildings, half-timbered houses and Baroque churches.
One of the main attractions of the city is St. Stephan church with the colourful stained glass windows by Marc Chagall. The weekly market in front of the Cathedral features everything a traveller could wish, from flowers to fresh local products and clothes.
You should not miss the futuristic building of the New Synagogue designed by Manuel Herz, as well as the museums of Mainz State, Ancient Shipping and the Gutenberg Museum.
Known for its sparkling wine, Mainz is Germany’s wine capital thanks to its excellent 200-year tradition. The natural reserve of the Mainz Sand Dunes is home to pre-glacial plant vestiges and rare animals.
Frankfurt International Airport is about 20 km away and has flights to Amsterdam, Los Angeles, Madrid and Copenhagen. Designed by Philipp Johann Berdellé, the Central Station of Mainz Hauptbahnhof connects the city with Mannheim and Rüsselsheim. We were in Mainz for only two full days but saw and experienced a lot. The Altstadt is beautiful. We visited the Gutenberg Museum and enjoyed their mini-workshop a lot. As an artist, my favourite was the St Stephan's Cathedral, with the stained glass windows designed by Chagall. I did not know of its existence, and I loved it! The Roman Theatre at the Romische Teater train station was not that impressive, as we could only look at it through construction wire. It would have been nice to sit there and contemplate its history. Nevertheless, I am glad I saw it. We also visited the Volkspark on a public holiday, and it was interesting to see how ordinary German families enjoy a sunny day.

Mainz is a fantastic city.
Mainz is a fantastic city. It has all the flavors what I long for. The strong history heritage, z.b. Mainz dom; the best wein Jard region of the world, z.b Rhine Weingau; authentic German food; the active growing business environment; the city is not big but just big enough for everything. Mainz is the city , the longer you stay, the more you love and you will go away. Ich liebe Mainz.

Mainz is a relatively small city founded in Roman times and
Mainz is a relatively small city founded in Roman times and
sits where the Rhine and Main rivers meet. Some Roman ruins still remain.
There is plenty of good shopping, places of interest and some great restaurants, a couple of days in the city is probably enough.
The Rhine forms the border between Rhineland Palatinate and Hessen, so you may need different travel tickets if you leave Mainz itself.
To see further afield, either the rhineland or hessen day tickets give up to five people unlimited rail travel for a very reasonable cost (about £30) so you can explore a large area cheaply.
It is a nice small hotel, with very friendly staff. Breakfast is ok, room is good for a short stay, location was great for me because I needed to go to the Uni campus for a conference. The parking at the hotel is free in general, but you need to be lucky to get a spot, so you can also reserve a parking spot in advance for 10 euros/day, or there is free parking on Draiser street just few steps away. In general it was a value for money and totally corresponds to its three stars. There is also a very good Greek restaurant in 3 min walk.
I arrived exhausted after a long full day train trip. I was greeted at reception by a very friendly man and he also helped with me deciding where to eat. Right next door, the food was excellent. In the morning, once again a really friendly member of staff. This is my go-to hotel in Mainz and it is always a pleasure. The deco may be a bit outdated but everything is perfectly clean and comfortable. I loved my bed.
Unfortunately I overslept and missed breakfast. Next time I will make sure not to miss it!
The welcome letter says that Hotel-Hammer wants "to attract guests who feel at home with us." SCORE! This place is great. Just steps across the street from the Mainz train station. Someone to welcome you at the front desk 24/7. They cheerfully held half of our luggage for two days while we went off on a side trip. The breakfast buffet is excellent—abundant, artfully served and delicious. Pizza, tart flambé and lobby bar are available 24/7. Mini-fridge in the room, too! What more could you want?
We both loved this quaint little hotel tucked down a cute side street in a central part of Mainz. The hotel was small and characteristic of the area, full of charm. The room was big enough and the beds and pillows were good. No problems in sleeping.
The central location was a bonus - was walkable to so many things. We had the hotel's breakfast buffet one morning. Lots of yummy things to choose from and even wine on the offering if you so desired. Highly recommended.
We forgot that the keys needed to be picked up at a hotel/restaurant just up the street but once we figured that out all was well. We went back to the restaurant for dinner and had an excellent meal including gluten and dairy free options. The apartment had everything we needed including a cloths washer which was great after being on the road for a few weeks. Location was convenient to the old town area and great access to the Rhine and the tour boats.
The hotel is 25 minutes' walk from the Mainzer Dom and it's a modern building in a nice are that it's being renovated. A parking garage is not far away, in case you don't want to use the hotel one, which can fill quickly. Breakfast is pretty good, but you have to go before 9:30, when it can be pretty busy, The self-check-in is nice and effective. The room is modern, comfortable and quite.
The hotel is in the immediate vicinity of the Congress Center and the bank of the river Rhein. It is in the center of the cultural and historical contents of the city of Mainz. The breakfast is nicely arranged, it contains a lot of options for combining quality tastes.
The room was very comfort and quiet so we could have a pleasant stay at this hotel. It provides us clean and new facilities, and one can also have very nice German style breakfast. It is located at a walkable distance from Mainz Hbf.
The location is perfect if you're getting off the train with a lot of luggage, and also very convenient to the old town. Breakfast was delicious. I personally also really liked the hotel's aesthetic, for what that's worth.
Hotel is across street from Bahnhof. Rooms are layed out very nice with enough room.
Breakfast was good with lots of choices. Staff pleasant and helpful. Location good for altstadt. Great place to stay.
The hotel was clean and had a good amount of space in the room and toilets. Comfortable beds too. The location was generally central and quiet, near the train station but quite a distance with big luggages.
Compact well equipped self catering accommodation on the second floor of a heritage building in the Altstadt Mainz. Great location, sufficient sound-proofing from the windows so sleep not a problem.
Very nice and comfortable hotel, the service staff is great and very friendly, also very polite. Good breakfast and working air conditioning. Osiris at breakfast service is really great!
We were in the apartments across the road from the hotel it was spacious and equipped with everything you needed. Breakfast was very good. Pool a great size for a hotel.
