The kitchen deserves an extra praise: it has everything you need for cooking, it is always clean and organized and you can meet fellow travelers and share some stories of polar bears and northern lights. I feel I was very lucky to spend my days in this guesthouse. (I should also mention that "shared bathroom" means you share it with only one more room. Also the bathrooms are all located at the end of the corridor after the stairs, which means it's very silent in the rooms)

A MUST GO DESTINATION! Spend at least 3 full days in the main town before heading off on an expedition cruise,to get a real feel for this isolated region and don't miss the amazing museum....I recommend the Svalbard Hotell to stay in....great location with very comfortable beds and fantastic staff. We spent 2 weeks on a cruise from and around Svalbard to the Russian high Arctic Franz Josef Land The scenery is incredible in it's isolation and history. We were very lucky to see up close and personal 9 massive polar bears from the zodiacs and lots of walrus.....July 2016... The fragile flora is to behold....how it survives in this harsh environment is incredible. Going there can't help but change you....go and you will know you have been to one of the most incredible places on earth! Go before there are no more polar bears left, and the icecap melts!!!!!
Beautiful city with plenty to do -even without a gun :) Recommended: Svalbard Museum, local church and grave yard (of the whale hunters), local restaurants and pubs, husky farm (basecamp), ice cave trip (!), snow mobile trip, walk at the beach/sea shore, and Global Seed Vault. Very good harmony in the city. Everyone's kind and hospitable and it seems that no one is in a rush : )
Longyearben is a tiny village with the facilities of a much bigger town. The museum is excellent and there are plenty activities to do. Just google Svalbard and you get the overviews. The air is probably the cleanest on the planet. The surrounding is sublime, breathtaking, humbling.
Hardly a "metropolis" but truly one of the most interesting places on earth. Scenery is breathtaking and there us is plenty to do for a few days visit. Take one of the voyages to Barentsberg, Pyramidion or go whale watching. Or have a husky sleigh ride. There is a great little town centre with shops cafes and bars. The only downfall is that the whole place is extremely expensive. Norway is expensive anyway but Svalbard is expensive even for Norwegians - especially buying any alcohol in bars. £7 for a small glass of weak beer is a good incentive to be teetotal on your visit!
If you want to get away from it all then this is the place! 24 hour daylight in June. Go to Pyramiden on a board trip which is very interesting. As it is is Svalbard and Norway it is very expensive but worth it if you like nature and remoteness
A little frontier town with lots to do and see. Loved the Wildphoto gallery, and had good meals at all the restaurants we tried. The "Freunde" coffee shop was a lovely gathering place. We went on a photographic trip on the Malmo ice-pusher boat to see the polar bears and wildlife of the Svalbard archipelago - an amazing experience!
Longyearbyen is s truly unique experience. Small enough to explore on foot with amazing opportunities to explore outside. Saw Northern Lights outside our hotel, did a great highlights tour with a real character of a guide, a day on snowmobiles, dog sledding with Svalbard Husky AS who had small groups and lovely dogs, and a snow cat trip, all brilliant experiences with interesting and knowledgeable guides who really know their stuff. Food wise, as with anywhere in Norway, food and drink is expensive, we had great food and pastries in Rabalder cafe, they do a hot lunch from 11.00-14.00 and we had amazing food in here. The hot lunch we had was fantastic, full of flavour and a good sized portion and was relatively cheap in Norwegian terms , we wished they were open in the evenings but they close at 16.30. We had our first evening meal in Svalbar pub, moose and reindeer burger and pizza, good food but nothing special, attentive staff though. The supermarket sells cans of soft drinks for about a pound which beats the cost of soft drinks in the pubs and hotels so we took those back to our rooms. Souvenirs for the kids were also cheaper in there. I highly recommend a trip here, the people are fantastic and the experiences you can have are unique.
Stayed at the Svalbard Hotell Polfareren, nice rooms with all modern facilities and an amazing view over the water to the mountains, great to wake up to every morning. Breakfast and restaurant dinner were great. Took snowmobile trip to the east coast and Barentsburg, fjord cruise and a day dog sledding, each trip being special in its own way but made even better by great weather. A meal in the Huset restaurant is a must, we took the 7 course tasting menu, fantastic food and each course presented and served in a special way, from reindeer horn to lump of coal, amazing!!!! But all of these things are really the icing on the cake to what is an amazingly beautiful, peaceful and truly special place.
We really enjoyed the boat trip to the glacier! It took 6 hours together and we stopped at the bird nesting cliff, saw arctic fox and puffins, visited the glacier and on the way back belugas appeared near to our boat. Our guide (a young lady from Sweden) told us a lot of stories about the animals, the fjord and glacier. We had also a short stop for lunch on the fjord. The sightseeing tour with Svalbard Buss og Taxi was also excellent! Our guide, Vigo was a highly knowledgeable man - gave us a lot of new information about the city, which we could not find on the internet (read several articles before the tour). I would recommend to visit Svalbard to everyone, it is a fantastic experience!!! :)
Loved the two excursions I did - The Arctic Challenge (with Svalbard Wildlife Expeditions) and the Husky Sledding (with Svalbard Huskys). Both were incredible experiences, and both companies were professional as well as approachable and friendly. I also loved the history - seeing the old coal mines - and appreciating the tough life the earlier inhabitants endured. Great food at the cafe (whose name I can't remember, sorry!) and also liked how easy it is to walk around the township
Longyearbyen
Staff was very good and helpful. they arrange day trip to many attractions. It is close to city center but there is no pick from this dom for any day trip conducted by other tour operators - you need to walk to near by pick up point ( Radisson blu Hotel ) but it is very close ( 3 minutes walk ). Longyearbyen settlement itself is very small so it doesn’t matter where you stay ( everything is at walkable distance). I will stay here again if I come back to Svalbard.
Longyearbyen
Affordable place to make your base camp for Svalbard adventures. The staff was AMAZING, if you have the chance to talk to Ruth from Bristol, you will be utterly delighted! I was surprised that even as a hostel they left you nice robes and had house keeping tidy up daily. The common area had a great breakfast and a nice bar (and hot chocolate station!) and was a nice place to chill in the morning or the evening.
I have travelled a lot, although never to somewhere as remote and cold as Svalbard before, and stayed in some fabulous places. This however is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in for its friendliness, stylishness and cosiness - and its fantastic food and bar. Rooms and common areas extremely comfortable and welcoming. Far exceeded my expectations.
Our stay was magic at the Base Camp. We experienced a magic moment in this cosy place. The hotel does have a particular atmosphere where you feel "at home". They serve hot chocolate, tea, cookies for free which was not expected and well appreciated. We recommend this place to everyone travelling to Svalbard.
The staff, especially the cleaning staff, but also reception, were very pleasant and helpful. In particular, I appreciated the help with retrieving my suitcase which was lost in transit and, at the end of my stay, helping me move my luggage to the other Svalbard Hotel for my Polar Quest cruise. Thank you very much!
Our stay was brilliant. The hotel had all the facilities we needed, plus a very nice restaurant and a separate pub inside the hotel. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful in general. We would stay here again if we visit the magical Svalbard again in the future.
The hotel is located in the city centre ( which is essentially 3 or 4 streets). Breakfast was ample and the staff were helpful. The room was cozy and clean. As of now, I plan to go back to Svalbard in a couple of years in summer and plan to stay in this hotel again.
Longyearbyen
As soon as the bus arrived we got a very warm welcome from Elena (the host), she is very friendly like everyone on Svalbard. The Hotel got everything you need and is very clean.
Longyearbyen
The Mary-Ann's has become my go to hotel when I have to visit the Svalbard. Great people, an amazing atmosphere and only a few minutes away from the city center.
Longyearbyen
The Lodge 2 bedroom apartment had large rooms . Checkin was easy in the almost next door Svalbard Polferen Hotel. Was given a door code by the helpful staff .
Longyearbyen
Its expensive but for Svalbard standards relatively ‘cheap’. Nice waffles at breakfast.
