A sweet, unpolished beach town.
A sweet, unpolished beach town. There are no huge multinational hotels on the beach, just low-rise local hotels and apartments. The strip along the beach feels relaxed, calm and slightly down-at-heel. It's easy to explore on foot. As two solo women travellers, we felt safe throughout our stay, though we didn't leave the tourist area. The beach itself is huge and very long, with incredible surf waves. There is a small beach area at the north end where it's possible to swim, but the waves are still quite big, especially for children. There are lifeguards all along the beach. There are nice restaurants right on the beachfront, all serving the same simple food. We only stayed two nights - I think at least four nights are needed to really relax and get used to the pace of life here. There are also several excursions nearby which would have been fun if we'd had more time!

A huge long beach, Zicatela is a lovely place but will change very soon with all the development and construction going on.
Already lots of bars, restaurants, shops and hotels, but still relatively chilled at the moment.
Beware of what you carry, police search anyone they can on the beach to extort money!!

Even if a relatively small town the neighbourhoods are very different; Centro where the hotel is, more local people, Bacocho (a bit more hipster was my impression), Zicatela the touristic part with a lovely beach and Brisas de Zicatela where its mostly backpackers and surfers (its just off Punta Zicatela where the best waves are)

It grew on me. I didn't love it at first.
It grew on me. I didn't love it at first. I think its more suited to younger people than people in their mid 40s + who have already done the backpacking thing. Also I live on a beautiful beach in Australia so it's hard to be impressed by grey sand of Zacatelas beach.. However Carrizalillo beach was beautiful. I recommend visiting that beach while you are there.
I felt like a bit of a sellout as Puerto is not the real mexico, there are more Australians and Americans there than Mexicans it seems. So if you want an authentic Mexican experience you should go to Puebla or Mexico city, but if your looking for a chilled vibe on the beach then you will probably like Puerto.
You'll find better food in other parts of the country also - Oaxaca city, Meixco city, Puebla etc.
It's very hot there. but there's nothing much else to do than hang at the beach.

Overall was great trip.
Overall was great trip. The town feels more international compared to other places I’ve visited in mexico, it lacks that authentic Mexican feeling. The hotel was great, tucked away from the Main Street, very peaceful.

Best falafels and hummus et El Sultan on the Rinconada.
Best falafels and hummus et El Sultan on the Rinconada. Best whole bean coffee as well as cappuccino and cookies at Binisa Cafe. As expats living in San Agustinillo, an hour away, we find things in Puerto that we cannot find in San Agustinillo, Mazunte, or Zipolite. We found some really excellent sharp cheddar cheese at Super 69 grocery on the Rinconada, cans of white meat whole tuna packed in water also at Super 69, bought beautiful Talavera tile for our bathroom at the Talavera store on the Rinconada, and picked up health food products like chia at one of the many small health food stores in Puerto that sell bulk goods.

A quiet little paradies, you never wanna leave!! Me and my friend read all the good reviews and were curious. We arrived with a food poisoning from Mexico city and everyone was so caring and lovely, that we felt welcome and cosy from the first day. The villa is quiet and idyllic, it’s more like a big community space with pool, roof top terrace and great to meet your little crew for further puerto activities.
We feel really lucky, we found this place and ate already planning to come back :)
Everything was wonderful about Zandoyo! The owners and staff were friendly and helpful, and the breakfasts were fantastic.
My room was very comfortable and the bathroom was very well designed with lots of space to put things.
The pool area had lovely landscaping and the guest kitchen was quite well supplied if you wanted to prepare a meal.
I highly recommend a stay here if you venture to Puerto Escondido!!
Best place I have stayed so far in Mexico 🫶🏽
Waking up and walking straight towards the sea through that dreamy restaurant is amazing. Rooms are clean and very comfortable, restaurant has nice food and affordable prices.
Plus all staff were incredible they have spoiled me so much 🩷 specially Jonathan he is great, always with the best vibes and good recommendations at the restaurant.
This was our favorite place during our 3 weeks in Mexico. We loved the athmosphere of the hotel (and Puerto Escondido!). The staff was great (they helped us a lit with booking tours, taxis,…), food was great (cocktails too!), rooms were great. They organize things like salsa lessons which is really fun, especially for solo travelers. Free bikes were a plus.
The Hotel Santa Fe is our go to place when visiting Puerto Escondido. Hotel Santa Fe is a lovely, colonial style hotel with beautiful pools, terrace and directly across the street from Zicatela beach. Our favorite part of Hotel Santa Fe is the wonderful on site restaurant- hands down one of the best restaurants in Puerto Escondido! Can’t wait to come back!
I stayed at a beautiful apartment on top floor with an amazing view over the ocean and epic sunsets every single day. The flat is spacious, super clean and has everything in it you may need. It must be one of my favourite places I stayed at in Mexico. I would definitely stay again and would highly recommend. This place is a real gem!
It is awesome to be able to use the swimming pool when you come back from a day at the beach (late) in the evening. Also, we flew out late at night to Mexico City, and we were very grateful for the opportunity, after checking out in the morimng, to use a bathroom to shower and freshen up before leaving to the airport.
What a beautiful, relaxing oasis!! We enjoyed our stay at Cabane Container hotel so much... pure luxury, starting with the beautifully designed suite, then the wonderful pool with warm water, and incredibly delicious food... what a total treat!! Highly recommended for unwinding, enjoying life, and pure relaxation
The hotel is new, well maintained, flawless staff, always clean and the rooms were cleaned every day. Clean pool. Huge rooms and beds, very comfortable also. Big balconies. We liked that it's adults only, was very relaxing having no kids around. All in all, the best hotel that we stayed in while visiting Mexico.
The common areas are so cute, everything is very clean and the staff is so nice, our flight was late and we stayed the whole day in and out of the hotel and by the pool after checking out. They have surfboard and bikes available for guests. The AC works perfectly which is a must in Puerto Escondido.
Everything was super clean, AC works well, comfortable mattress, location is amazing (perfect sunset spot), it was my first stop in Mexico and thanks to Carlos I felt at home immediately :) he helped me with everything and responded immediately! Couldn’t imagine a better start!
We enjoyed staying at a traditional Mexican accomodation for our last night in Puerto Escondido. Being a family of 3 we appreciated the combo of a King size and queen bed for a very reasonable cost. The view from our balcony was epic.
The hotel is brand new and has everything you need for a high-quality stay at the beach in Puerto Escondido. Our room was nice with a great view. Staff was super friendly and helpful.
amazing stay! best place I’ve stayed in Mexico.
Phillip stayed up late to check us in. gave us a full tour of the property and how everything worked. great guy!
The location is amazing. Right on the beach and short walk to the centre of Puerto Escondido and to Zicatela. Some of the staff was welcoming and helpful.
